Villeneau, Sarah

Through the primal and formless substance of clay, I create abstract sculptures suggestive of the human body as well as otherworldy or microscopic lifeforms and geological pattern, form and texture that are universal, a connecting thread throughout our known world. The textured clay and glaze surfaces, and the occasional inclusion of inorganic materials – nails, wire, pre-fired ceramics – might express fragility, imperfection, life’s journey. I approach my work intuitively; pushing and stretching the clay, letting it create its own shape which I build upon. The work is fired to stoneware in an electric kiln.
