Sheppard, Shirley

Why do I sculpt in Clay and fire with wood? “Fire has been essential to our existence and development. Its handling is in our social consciousness and we respond to its flame intuitively.” (Nils Lou). It is this social consciousness that bonds me to wood firing while clay has a mind of its own that must be respected yet fought against and with. These two together are my nature, giving sculptures that have survived the flames they were created in and bear all of the natural and spontaneous scars associated with their making – something that can never be caught in bronze, stone or wood.
