I came late to ceramics. After retiring from a long career in teaching, I qualified in Contemporary Ceramic Practice with distinction, at Newcastle College in 2008. Since then I have worked primarily to develop my skill as a potter, rather than with any other objective. I move from handbuilding to throwing to modelling, from earthenware to porcelain, from abstract to figurative, as I aim to fill the gaps in my experience. Apart from learning to throw, I am most proud of some success with crystalline glazing – which is infuriatingly hard to replicate and impossibly time-consuming, but the results I believe are the most beautiful that can be achieved in the mystery of glazed ceramics.
